Though Armistice Day was first created to specifically honor the veterans of World War I, it was amended in 1954 to include American veterans of all wars, and became known as Veterans Day. Today, citizens celebrate Veterans Day by showing their appreciation not only for war veterans but also for all members of the United States military who currently serve or have served to preserve the freedoms and liberties that America is known for. Many of those military members are abroad, serving in Afghanistan and Iraq, putting their lives on the line every day, even after combat operations have ceased. Others serve the nation at home, protecting the homeland at all costs. Even stateside military members are still at risk, sometimes from outside threats and sometimes even from those amongst them. In August 2009, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan killed 12 military members and one civilian and wounded 30 others at Ft. Hood in Texas. Despite these rare incidences, military members provide cohesive protection for the American populous against enemies at home and abroad. United States citizens generally recognize this, and most strive to show their support for the protective efforts of the military. Numerous organizations from churches to hometown businesses collect items such as toiletries, cellphones, clothing and snack foods to send to military members to ease the discomfort of being away from home and show their appreciation. American's also show their support of the military in symbolic fashions. Each year, numerous ceremonies, parades and celebrations are held on Veterans Day as a way to honor those of the past and present who have served in the United States military. Many visit the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to attend the annual Veterans Day Observance at the Wall in Washington, D.C. while others attend the Veteran's Day National Ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, which is the eternal resting place of an unidentified soldier from World War I, World War II and Korea. Honoring the soldiers who have bravely fought in the past to preserve the future of Americans as well as those who currently serve helps to remind the citizens of the United States just how high the price of peace is. Sacrifices too numerous to even comprehend have been and will be made in the name of freedom, liberty and peace, and the citizens of American have military service members to thank. This Veterans Day, reflect upon those who gave their lives, known and unknown, for the America of today, and thank a living service member who continues in that noble cause. Fri, 11 Nov 2011 11:31:07 GMT http://www.pfvrs.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=87 Daylight Savings time ENDS - Sunday, November 6, 2011 at 0200 hours http://www.pfvrs.org/apps/public/news/newsView.cfm?News_ID=93 Change your clock . . . . . . . Change your batteries! SMOKE ALARM SAFETY TIPS Smoke alarms save lives. Almost two-thirds of home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. When there is a fire, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. Safety tips • Install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area and on every level of the home, including the basement. Interconnect all smoke alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound. • An ionization smoke alarm is generally more responsive to flaming fires, and a photoelectric smoke alarm is generally more responsive to smoldering fires. For the best protection, both types of alarms or a combination alarm (photoelectric and ionization) should be installed in homes. • Test alarms at least monthly by pushing the test button. • Smoke rises; install smoke alarms following manufacturer's instructions high on a wall or on a ceiling. Save manufacturer's instructions for testing and maintenance. • Replace batteries in all smoke alarms when you change set your clocks forward or back. If an alarm "chirps", warning the battery is low, replace the battery right away. • Replace all smoke alarms, including alarms that use 10-year batteries and hard-wired alarms, when they are 10 year old or sooner if they do not respond properly. • Be sure the smoke alarm has the label of a recognized testing laboratory. • Alarms that are hard-wired (and include battery backup) must be installed by a qualified electrician. • If cooking fumes or steam sets off nuisance alarms, replace the alarm with an alarm that has a "hush" button. A "hush" button will reduce the alarm's sensitivity for a short period of time. • An ionization alarm with a hush button or a photoelectric alarm should be used if the alarm is within 20 feet of a cooking appliance. • Smoke alarms that include a recordable voice announcement in addition to the usual alarm sound, may be helpful in waking children through the use of a familiar voice. • Smoke alarms are available for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. These devices use strobe lights. Vibration devices can be added to these alarms. • Smoke alarms are an important part of a home fire escape plan.
